Meet Our Veterinarians

  • Dan Bergerud
    DVM
    Dr. Dan joined Cass Veterinary Services in January 1997. His rural Iowa upbringing in Burt, Iowa and later in Iowa City, had a big influence on his chosen field. After high school, Dr. Dan completed his veterinary studies at Iowa State University. His original interest in veterinary medicine came about while working with dairy cows on the family farm. There are currently only a few dairy cows in the area and his favorite is a Jersey cow named Peaches.

  • Josh Castaneda
    DVM
    After his graduation from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014, Dr. Josh joined Cass Veterinary Services. He is a member of American Veterinary Medicine Association, Illinois Veterinary Medicine Association, as well as an Alumni member of Omega Tau Sigma (OTS) veterinary fraternity. Dr. Castaneda still hosts students from OTS to help during rescue days, and help them practice their surgical skills. Having lived in Mexico for 18 years, Dr. Castaneda is ready to help our clients in either English or Spanish.

  • Nicole Pfeiffer
    DVM
    Dr. Pfeiffer grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. As a child, her family lived in South Korea for several years. After completing her undergraduate degree at Benedictine University, Nikki pursued her veterinary degree at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Following veterinary school, she completed an equine surgery and medicine internship at a large surgical center in New Jersey. She stayed on several years as an associate equine veterinarian, but knew she would eventually return to the Midwest. In February 2014, she moved to Springfield and joined an equine exclusive practice. After three years, the practice dissolved and Dr. Pfeiffer joined Cass Veterinary Service in May 2017.

    DVM
    Dr. Zeller grew up on a farm near Alexander and always found the various animals fascinating, so becoming a veterinarian was a natural progression for him. He graduated from the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine in 1974 and began working for Drs. McKinney and Roegge in what was then a mixed animal practice.

  • Anna
    Hospital & Clinic Manager – Virginia Clinic
    Born and raised in rural Illinois, Anna knew at a young age she wanted to work in the animal care field. She joined Cass Veterinary Services in 2004, but has worked in the profession since 1988 with experience in general, emergency and specialty medicine. Her favorite areas of treatment include radiology, lab work, and petting the patients.

    Veterinary Technician | Jacksonville Clinic Manager | Bookkeeper
    Tina has been with Cass Veterinary Service for six years. Her love of all furry creatures began at an early age. She lives on a hobby farm with her husband and they have dogs, cats, horses, chickens, fainting goats and a miniature donkey. She has fostered many dogs and cats over the years, and volunteers her time at the local shelter advocating for homeless animals.

    Tina has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry.

    Inventory & Ordering Coordinator | Media and Marketing Coordinator
    Kris joined our team in May 2017 as a receptionist in our Virginia Clinic. Her more than 30 years of business administration experience, including bookkeeping, payroll, human resources and marketing, made her a natural to move into her current role in our inventory and ordering procedures.

    Small and Large Animal Technician – Virginia Clinic
    During high school, Tyler worked as a kennel assistant at our clinic. After graduation, he joined the team full time as a Small and Large Animal Technician. He works primarily in our Virginia clinic and on house and farm calls with our vets.

    Tyler rescued and shares his home with Tank, a Mastiff mix.

  • Terrie
    Veterinary Technician – Jacksonville clinic
    A self-described lifelong animal lover, Terrie has worked with veterinarians for many years. Cass Veterinary Services gained Terrie’s vast experience when they acquired Dr. Zeller’s practice in May 2017. Terrie worked with Dr. Zeller for more than 37 years, combining her pleasure of working around animals with the necessity of feeding her own.

    Terrie is a lover of all animals, but has a special interest in Morgan horses, Australian Cattle Dogs, geese ducks and chickens.

    Veterinary Technician – Virginia Clinic
    Jenny is another central Illinois born and raised local. Prior to joining the Cass Veterinary Services team in 2016, she worked as a Veterinary Tech in Missouri for four years.

    Receptionist - Jacksonville Clinic
    You will find Lisa front and center at our Jacksonville clinic. She joined our team in May 2017 as receptionist in our new clinic. Her lifelong love of animals made her right at home on our team.

    Lisa was born and raised in Jacksonville. She and her husband share their rural home with three rescued dogs.

  • Keri
    Receptionist – Virginia Clinic
    Keri was born and raised In Virginia, Illinois. With almost 20 years in customer service, she has been a great addition to the Cass Veterinary Services team since she joined in August of 2017.

    A lifelong lover of all animals, Keri’s compassion for our patients and family member clients is a great addition to our staff. When not at the clinic, Keri can often be found spending time with furbaby loves, dog Zoey, and cats Fiona and Cali.

  • Rachael
    Receptionist - Jacksonville Clinic
    Rachael’s work background in both the medical and customer service fields made her a great addition to our Jacksonville clinic. A Jacksonville native, Rachael works part time while completing her college major in dental hygiene.

    An animal lover who has never lived without a pet around, working at our clinic allows her to be around animals of many kinds. She loves spending free time with her Shar Pei at local dog parks meeting new pet and human friends.

  • Morgan
    Kennel Assistant – Jacksonville Clinic
    Morgan joined Cass Veterinary Services in May 2017. She keeps busy walking and caring for small animals in our Jacksonville clinic, as well as maintaining the kennel.

    Currently in school, Morgan hopes to pursue a veterinary technician position with our clinic after she completes school. She volunteers many hours with PAWS, an area rescue facility. She enjoys this time as it allows her another opportunity to work with cats and dogs of all types.

  • Kris
    Groomer - Jacksonville Clinic
    Kris was born in California and lived in North Carolina before settling in the Midwest. She always thought she would be a veterinarian, but ended up taking another path. Her grooming work began when she spent ten years grooming 20 poodles her family raised. Kris was also a junior handler and showed in conformation and obedience.

    After obtaining a cosmetology license, Kris later realized she preferred grooming animals over people. It's easy to see that animals have always been a big part of her life, so when she saw a job listing that said, 'must love animals', she knew it was for her. That was more than 27 years ago when she started working at Dr. Zeller's office. Cass Veterinary Services is happy to have her join our team.

  • Morgan W.
    Groomer - Virginia Clinic
    Morgan has been with Cass Veterinary Services since 2013. She began her grooming career early in life after taking grooming classes at age 15 to see if she wanted to pursue the field. She fell in love with grooming and began working at a local veterinary clinic where she worked until she graduated from John Wood Community College with an Associates degree in Animal Science.

    In 2012, Morgan became a young entrenpreneur when she opened her own grooming business in Griggsville Illinois. She continues her education by attending seminars and learning the newest techniques.

    She was raised on a small farm in rural Brown County and has nutured every type of livestock and small animal. Her dedication and loyalty to grooming goes much farther than just a bath and a shave. She loves the feeling of comforting the scared client and making their experience in her care a welcomed event.

  • Madison
    Veterinary Technician - Virginia Clinic
    Madison is a Beardstown High School graduate and recently received her associates degree in Veterinary Technology at The Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College.

    Madison started as a Kennel Assistant with Cass Veterinary Services in 2014 and has assisted in the clinic during college. Her favorite areas of treatment are dental services, surgery and appointment assists.

    She has loves her Chihuahua, Wiley, and her Indian Ringneck, Cuddles.

    Kennel Assistant - Virginia Clinic
    Lisa has worked with our clinic for ten years. She started as a weekend Kennel Assistant in our Ashland clinic. In 2010, she moved to our Virginia clinic as a Kennel Assistant.

  • Steve
    Veterinary Technician - Jacksonville Clinic

    Steve grew up in Peoria Heights, IL. He and his family moved to Jacksonville for his son to attend the Illinois School for the Deaf.

    Steve is a Certified Veterinary Assistant and has worked with several rescue groups, most recently with PAWS in Jacksonville. He has a passion for animal rescue and veterinary medicine and is licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to foster animals. Steve has three dogs, Sky, Princess, and Apollo and one cat, Emory. Special needs cases are of special interest to Steve and he claims, 'I have never met a dog i can't make friends with.'


  • Nancy
    Secretary - Ashland Clinic

    Nancy joined Cass Veterinary Services in June after retiring from 38 years with the IL EPA. Born and raised in Ashland, Nancy loves all pets. She is owned by two cats, O'Malley and Patches, and a German Shorthair named Luther.
